Rome, the capital city of Italy, as well as being the regional capital of Lazio (or Latium), is located on the river Tiber at 20 metres above sea level. Rome is the largest city in Italy and has an incredible number of tourist 'must-see' tick-boxes - St. Peter's, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona and the market at Campo de' Fiori, ... and on, and on, and on. A day does not do the city justice, a week would be easily filled, but there is far more to this region than the big guns of Rome.
The area around Viterbo makes a good base for exploring not only Lazio and the heartland of the Etruscans, but also Umbria and Tuscany to the north. Closer to Rome are the Castelli Romani and the vineyards of Frascati, or you may be tempted by the famous spas at Fiuggi. Then there are some delightful coastal resorts and fishing villages, the lake at Bolsena, archaeological sites like Cerveteri and Tarquinia, mountain lakes and skiing ... you get the idea.
